This video got me thinking, the Silver Hand's mistake was not trying to prove to the rest of Skyrim that the Companions were lead by werewolves before attacking Jorvaskr. They just resorted to ambushes before launching a direct attack on the HQ of Skyrim's oldest and most respected group of Warriors, which is how most of Skyrim sees it. If the order wasn't soon wiped out by Vilkas and the player, I'd bet public opinion would have turned against them hard, meaning considerably less recruits at a time where the player and Aela were already hitting them hard, and Jarls may have started to treat them as outlaws by posting bounties, ironic since they're just renamed bandits with slightly better weapons in game.
